Currently housing a heritage centre in a restored colonial bungalow, Bukit Chandu sits near the site of the historic Battle of Pasir Panjang, where 1,400 brave soldiers from the Malay Regiment fought while vastly outnumbered, against an attacking force of 13,000 during WWII. The title of Djohan Hanapi’s work, which translates to “Death Before Dishonour”, references this battle. The artist used to live in the area, and shares that he felt as though the surrounding forest nature ‘spoke’ to him. Accordingly, the poem featured in his work was “written in the context of (his) conversation with the hill”.
