Cratus is the story of Clinton Lee, someone who is willing to risk it all to realise his dreams. Clinton is a Powerlifter. It is a sport that receives no funding from the Singaporean government. Clinton is currently sixth in the world, but his journey has been one of deafening silence. He has to fund his own journeys overseas to compete and even after winning, there is little recognition for his efforts. Having once grown up in an affluent family that lost everything, Powerlifting is now Clinton’s everything.
The project is a meditation on the burden of dreams in Singapore. It questions the reality of the space needed for an alternative approach to living, one that doesn’t entail a life of Singaporean comfort and normality.
CRATUS follows Clinton’s first ever attempt in breaking the world record in the Squat. On his back will be a barbell loaded with 270.5kg, a weight more than three and a half times his bodyweight.
