Knuckles & Notch (2023)
This poster was designed by Knuckles & Notch to accompany Rafi Abdullah's Endgame interactive gamebook series for our Gachapon capsule project: Let's Play Ball – Art That Fits in Your Palm for Singapore Art Week 2023.
Endgame takes inspiration from Choose Your Own Adventure (CYOA) interactive gamebooks popular in the 1980s and is an exploration of choice, chance, and world-building. The work is developed together in collaboration with text-generating Artificial Intelligence (AI) models trained on datasets of archival CYOA books.
Through sessions of prompting, editing, and conversations with an AI, a series of ending sequences for a fictional short CYOA game book were generated and then translated into visual imagery through text-to-image generator AI models.
The entire process then becomes an exercise in gacha mechanics: a game of chance.
Rafi Abdullah is a writer and cultural worker whose broad interest is in contemporary art vis-a-vis the politics of aesthetics. Most recently, he has written about how old and emerging technology has provided vantage points for new knowledge-making, agencies, and navigating complications of contemporary living.
