"Green garden is a maximalist abstract collage, drawing inspiration from my childhood memories and some photos from the national archives. My mum used to work near the botanic gardens as a library assistant and sometimes she would bring me there. I don't remember the past clearly anymore, but I have photos of me holding up balloons as a child and terrorizing the black swan. I think about how the botanic gardens has carried different meanings for so many different people over the years; from early labourers working on the garden to regular park goers over the years and I wanted the work to reflect the lushness of the garden and the richness of connections woven into the land." Esther is an illustrator who likes going to museums. Her work often reflects on history and memory, the inner psyche and the subconscious, and how we relate to each other as people. Stories, through illustrations and images, are a great way of condensing lived experience and help us understand each other. She hopes to be able to tell more stories which connect, not divide people.
