While not as heavily featured as the ‘Midnight Express Diner’ where the film gets its name from, the convenience store where Takeshi Kaneshiro’s character forages for his canned pineapples was the setting I found most intriguing in ‘Chungking’s Express’. It represented on a smaller scale the heterotypic, cramped nature of Wong Kar Wai’s Hong Kong and exemplified the dichotomy of living amongst an abundance of people and commodities while remaining emotionally isolated.
