Knuckles & Notch (2022)

Inspired by a vivid childhood dream, the image of giant ocean waves swallowing the night sky constantly reminds me of mortality and the end of the world. The thought of death and what goes beyond it scares me. This post-pandemic life continues to offer me confusion and anxiety to a point where the only way to achieve peace of mind is by finding a safe room and abandoning this cruel world behind you. Being invisible in the middle of this chaos, I get to witness how being the slave of our own desires slowly transforms us into corrupted monsters, continuously seeking power and endlessly chasing the approval of others losing our identity in the process.

Izzad Radzali Shah (b.1986) is a multidisciplinary artist from Singapore. His practice often utilises drawing and painting to make artworks that poke fun at the self and modern society. Having been inspired by lowbrow cinema recently, he has since shifted to experimenting with new media works since 2020. Izzad plays drums for Singapore's hardcore punk band, SIAL, and has been constantly involving himself in musical projects as a multi-instrumentalist and also as a self-taught recording engineer.

Exhibition curatorial statement

Having sentience, consciousness, and the capacity to dream is what makes us unique beings.

Essentially, what we experience in our life determines how we perceive our future, create memories, and how we dream. Without our memories, genetics, and history, we cease to exist. It's a life cycle that gives us the ability to evolve as humans and as living creatures. Even the way we dream, or even daydream, is part of what makes us who we are.

This print exhibition features the interpretations of dreams by 14 (local and international) visual artists, elaborating on their own dreams to create dream manifestations that become reality. These dreams run deep and wild in the artists' subconscious minds, influencing their art and shaping them into unique artists with distinct visions and styles. The unseen and intangible things that they’ve experienced externally and in their minds become the visuals they create outside reality, giving birth to art once unimaginable.
